Mary helms the Bass Boat
A chance to spend time on the beautiful Norfolk Broads sailing a variety of boats. Length of stay is flexible and the accomodation is fully accessible.
When The dates which have been booked with the Nancy Oldfield Trust for this year are Saturday 19 July to Friday 25 July. This would mean being able to arrive from late Saturday afternoon and starting sailing on Sunday morning. There would be sailing available on the Friday for those who have the stamina to sail all day and then drive home
Home from home. Up to 10 members at a time can stay in the Nancy Oldfield Trust’s fully-accessible bungalow. Accommodation is in two and three-bedded rooms, some with en-suite facilities.
There is a well-equipped kitchen where we can prepare breakfast and evening meals. It is hoped that all those who can will participate in the catering so that no one person is burdened with too much work.
There will be a charge (TBA) per head per day which covers one night’s accommodation, breakfast, packed lunch and a day’s sailing. We will share the cost of suppers.
If it is the wish of those present we may eat at a local pub or restaurant on some evenings, fetch a takeaway or visit the coast for fish and chips.
Life afloat. Most sailing will take place from ‘The Ark’, the Trust’s floating base on Barton Broad, to which we will be taken out by boat from the staithe by the bungalow. There is a choice of modern and traditional keel boats available to sail, all under the supervision of the Nancy Oldfield Trust’s instructors. With a hoist both on the staithe and The Ark, plus an accessible toilet on The Ark, sailing is available for all levels of ability and sailing experience. For the more active there may also be the possibility of sailing the Trust’s river cruiser.
Stella and Eric on Randmeer
Things to do. Apart from sailing on Barton Broad, it should be possible to explore the River Ant, mostly under motor, to visit places of interest such as The Museum of the Broads and Toad Hole Cottage, the marshman’s house at How Hill. A trip on the solar-powered boat Ra may also be able to be arranged.
The Nancy Oldfield Trust can also offer opportunities such as canoeing and fishing, but usually the request from our group is for sailing, sailing and more sailing!
